Supernova Unveils New Unit to Pioneer 3D Printing for Defense and Space

August 15, 2024

Supernova, a company recently spun off from BCN3D in February, has announced the creation of a new business unit dedicated to advancing 3D printing technology in the defense and space sectors. This new division, named Supernova Defense & Space, focuses on the manufacturing of energetic materials, which are critical components in various defense and space applications.

Addressing Limitations in Traditional Manufacturing

The primary focus of Supernova Defense & Space is to tackle the challenges associated with traditional manufacturing processes, especially when producing complex applications like Solid Rocket Motors (SRMs). Traditional methods often struggle with the precise handling and production of high-viscosity materials required for these applications. Supernova’s proprietary Viscous Lithography Manufacturing (VLM) 3D printing process offers a groundbreaking solution to this issue.

VLM technology is capable of processing materials with viscosities up to 100 times higher than those manageable by conventional additive manufacturing techniques. This capability allows for the use of oligomer chains in material formulations, which can enhance mechanical properties significantly. With this innovation, Supernova sees a promising opportunity to process military-grade formulations with solid loads exceeding 80%, a threshold that most 3D printing technologies cannot handle.

Breakthroughs in High-Energy Material Printing

Supernova has already demonstrated the effectiveness of its VLM process by successfully printing formulations with more than 88% solid loads. As a result, the company has established a dedicated business unit to focus on the production of military-grade energetic materials such as Ammonium Perchlorate Composite Propellant (APCP) and Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX). These materials, known for their ability to release significant amounts of energy quickly through chemical reactions, are commonly used in propellants and explosives.

By combining its advanced VLM technology with these energetic materials, Supernova Defense & Space aims to offer unprecedented benefits. These include high-energy density, superior solid-load handling, stable and homogeneous component properties, and the freedom to design complex geometries. Additionally, the unit promises rapid prototyping capabilities and the potential for on-demand, on-shore production, which could be a game-changer for defense and space industries.

A Commitment to Innovation in Defense and Space

Roger Antunez, the founder and CEO of Supernova, emphasized the company’s dedication to pushing the boundaries of manufacturing technology. “Supernova Defense & Space represents our commitment to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible to manufacture,” Antunez stated. “By pioneering 3D printing of energetic materials, we’re not just advancing technology – we’re providing the tools to the engineers to innovate and reshape the future of defense and space industries.”

With the establishment of Supernova Defense & Space, Supernova is set to lead advancements in the defense and space industries. By utilizing its cutting-edge VLM 3D printing technology, the company is overcoming the challenges of traditional manufacturing and unlocking new potential in the production of high-energy materials. As these sectors continue to advance, Supernova’s innovations could become pivotal in driving the next generation of defense and space applications.
